Last day of work

Today is my last day working at my current restaurant. I’ve been working there for over a year now, but it is past the time for me to make a change. I have learned a lot from working here and at school. But now I think this job is too easy for me, and recently I have been really bored at work. My teachers know that I am quitting and looking for a new job, and they know the restaurant chefs, so I have received offers from several restaurants in need of workers already. One restaurant is owned by one of, if not the, top chefs in Hawai’i. I thought that it would be an excellent opportunity for me to work under him, but at the same time I thought that working there would take up a lot of my time. I will be taking a competition class from October, which sounds like it will be extremely time consuming. I didn’t want to have to drop the class or tell the restaurant that I could only be there limited hours. I figure that I should try my best in the competition class for now, since there will be plenty of opportunities to work under great chefs in the future. But this may be my only chance to explore culinary competition.

Mabuhay! Living in the Philippines

Well here we are……We moved to to Manila exactly one week ago. We are living in a modern part of Manila called Global City. It is a VERY nice area! I was amazed when I walked out the back door of my apartment to see Bonafacio High Street, a beautiful walking street with lots of nice stores, restaurants and coffee shops. I’m a big fan of coffee (see my first blog entry) and I’m not big on “chain” coffee shops, but you had to be impressed with the line-up. First there is the ever present and expected Starbucks, then Seattles Best, then Coffee Bean Tea and Leaf, then two local Filipino chains, Figaros and Bo’s. What surprised me most was the fact that there is a Krispe Kreme Donut place here!!! You can watch the donuts roll right off the assembly line. TGIF’s restaurant is there too. Shopping here has been a bit of a shock. American brands are very expensive (peanut butter, cereal, etc.). Taxi rides and fast food are cheap though. Well not much else to write, spent the week getting my kids ready to attend school here. I’ll end with the meaning of Mabuhay for those who may be wondering. Mabuhay (pronunciation: mah-BOO-hahy) is a word derived from the Tagalog language of the Philippines. It is used to express “Welcome”, “Hello”, or “Greetings”. ..
