シドニーのマッサージセンターを開いてもうすぐ１か月になります。

今週は、マッサージとヨガの割引きクラスを強調した小さなチラシを
２０００枚ほど作りました。私達は商店街に出て、道行く人達にチラシを配っています。

新聞広告と違い、宣伝を見た方々の表情や反応を、直接、見ることが出来るのは良いのですが、決して楽な仕事ではありません。

波乗り気分

だけど、波は怖い！

スーパーで買い物して外へ出るとすでに日没後。すわっ、ステファノーティスはベランダに出したまま。　

昨日と今日は寒冷前線の通過のため、夜間は華氏40度(摂氏5度)以下になりました。

内陸地帯では日没後は気温が急速に下がります。

急いで帰って、ステファノーティスを室内に入れねば。

以前、飼い犬の心臓の具合が悪くなり、自家製の食事を作っていた時も、

お腹を空かせているだろうと外出先から家路へ急いだものです。

あの頃とまったく同じ！

一週間ほど前のことです。その日、私は、朝６時頃、目を覚ましました。そして、窓から外を見ると、あたり一面、真っ赤に染まっていました。最初、それを見た時、本当に大袈裟ではなくて、どこかの違った惑星にいるような、また、地球の終わりが来たような錯覚に陥りました。

・・・赤い色は次第に黄色に変わっていきました。

後で、新聞の一面に大きく書かれた記事を読んで、ことの次第がわかりました。オーストラリアの広大な農場は、今年、雨の量が少なかったため、砂漠のように乾燥しているそうです。そこから大量の土が吹き飛ばされているということでした。

その日一日、細かい土埃が、車に積もり、また、家の窓やドアのすき間からも吹き込んできました。私はモップで何度も何度も掃除をしましたが、いくら拭き取っても床はザラザラしていました。私はオーストラリア人ですが、このような経験は初めてのことでした。

最初、朝日が少し出たところで見た時は、この写真の数倍、真っ赤でした。
３０分ぐらいして、だんだん黄色に変わっているところを撮影しました。

Yesterday at work, a couple of Japanese customers were looking at me strangely so I approached them to see if they needed something. When I asked them if they needed help, they said that they recognized me from somewhere. I was surprised because usually I remember faces pretty well but I didn’t recognize their faces at all. They asked if I had ever been to Japan before and I told them that I just went there this summer for a couple of months. Then they asked if I had ever been to Koiwa (which is a small town on the outskirts of Tokyo) and I said yes and that I was staying at a hotel there. I was surprised that they asked that question because it seemed so random to ask about Koiwa, which is such a small town. Right then, I remembered that they worked in the local supermarket (su-pa) where I would buy dinner frequently. I was really excited and told them that I remembered. I went on to tell them that I loved Japan and my experience in Koiwa. I couldn’t believe that of all the restaurants in Waikiki, they came to mine and of all the seats they could’ve been sitting in, they were sitting in my section. It just goes to show that we really do live in a small world.

It has been a long time since I have been on Nacos. My summer has been filled with baseball, colleges, studying, and friends! My new top three schools are USC, Santa Clara, and Washington. I have visited them all this summer, and they’re all great places to be. I will carry the torch of “speaking Japanese through the heart,” where ever I go. Please live your lives with vitality and strength, and stay true to yourself.
