夕方、オリビアさんが、空軍敷地内のプライベートビーチ、Bellowsに連れて行ってくれました。

日没時刻の７時７分に合わせてホノルルを出発しました。あいにくの曇り空で、夕陽は見られませんでしたが、まるで別世界にいるような平安を味わうことができました。

Since I had some free time this week, I decided to start cleaning around my house. I really needed to do some cleaning because its been a while. Since I’ve been cleaning, I’ve realized that I have so much junk at my place. It’s hard to believe that I accumulated so much stuff but at the end of my cleaning, I must have had 4 or 5 trash bags of junk. It really felt good to get rid of all that stuff.

I’ve noticed a distinct difference between the way Japanese people and Americans do barbecues.  When I have a barbecue, I like to make sure that I have a good sized grill available, so people can start eating without too much of a wait, and I can keep cooking until everyone starts to slow down.  The last time I went to a Japanese friend’s house for dinner in Tokyo, he was cooking on a tiny shichirin, so we had to wait quite a while for everything to get done, then bring it upstairs for everyone.  Not the most efficient, but my friend’s food was good and his heart was in the right place.

The biggest question I have though, is why do Japanese people insist on cutting up ALL of the steaks before serving?  I’ve caught (and stopped) several of my friends starting to do that when I have barbecues, and at their own barbecues it seems to be automatic.  What’s up with that?

Tomorrow is the big day, I leave for Tokyo and then head down to Misumi, close to the Hamada port in Shimane prefecture. I will live in a 3-bedroom house next to a small river. I am so excited and happy for this new endeavor. After many years of hard work practicing my Japanese at NACOS, it is all beginning to really pay-off:) Please let me know if you are ever in the region as I get more familiar with things and the area, of course I would love to show anyone around or spend time with friends of NACOS anytime.

先年、母の元に帰省した際　母は「本箱に面白そうな本があれば持ってらっしゃい」と言ってくれましたので、料理のページが気に入った熟年層むけの雑誌をスーツケースに詰めて帰ってきました。今日、「桃のコンポート」をつくったついでに他のページをぺらぺらめくっていると、「歌ってみたいシリーズ」と題したぺーじに「ゴンドラの唄」が楽譜入りで載っていました。出だしの「いーのちーみじーかし」を楽譜でなぞってみて、これまで「いのーちみじぃかぁーし」間違ったところを伸ばして歌っていたことに気が付き、作曲の中山晋平さんには失礼なことをしたと恥じ入っているところです。
